Scope Movement From Recoil (12 posts)

Has anyone had any issues with the amount of recoil causing the rings to slide along the scope? I have shot 3 boxes of ammo through my .300 WSM Synthetic Vanguard now and the scope has moved about 3/4 of an inch forward in the rings!!! My thoughts are that Sportsman's Warehouse didn't tighten my rings after bore sighting.....or is it from the amount of recoil this gun seems to produce? Help.....I have moved the scope back into position and retightened the rings hoping I didn't just squeeze my optics too much....any thoughts?

I have a 300RUM; after the last time I shot it I noticed what appears to be ring marks on the scope tube -- I assume the scope slid a tad. I don't recall having checked the tightness of the screws since I mounted the scope, and I haven't checked the screws since I noticed the marks on the scope; however, I suspect they may have loosened a bit after having been shot over 130 times. Before I shoot it again I'll just tighten the ring screws, and be more diligent in the future about checking their tightness on a regular basis. I don't know about over-squeezing your scope, but I doubt that you did.

You will find your scope has moved forward, yes I have had this problem before with my .270 and now with my .338win Magnum. The cure is simply to glue the scope into the rings as all the tightening you try will only damage the scope.

Westy, the thought of putting glue on my scope tube doesn't excite me; maybe I need to consider other options? I suspect my scope didn't move until after I had shot quite a few times; in other words, the rings were tight for a while. If that's the case I don't understand how keeping the ring screws tight would damage the scope.

Rubber cement works pretty good without the extreme adhesion that other glues would dry to. Check tightness often with a torque wrench. Rings, mounts and action screws. There are some inexpensive torque wrenches for sale at Brownells and Midway that work great for this.
You can get ring marks from a ring-mount steup that is not properly aligned.

Hi The guys at www.nearmfg.com make a real nice set of rings and base for the Weatherby rifle. I ordered the set. Its not cheap but whaen you get the shot of a life time its well worth it.

I've heard that a layer of electrician's tape inside of the scope ring does a good job of stopping scope movement.

I agree with 257Shooter
Rubber cement has always worked for me, I just brush it on the inside of the rings, let it dry, and install the scope.

If it aint broke.....Dont fix it

Firmly tighten the set screws for the rings again as well as the mount, if that doesn't work, get some new rings and a mount is my suggestion. I personally prefer not to use rubber cement even though it is cheaper and will probably work.

Through further investigation I had 2 problems going on here...First, the Millet brand rings I purchased were a "little" off with their precise diameter inside of the rings. Due to the MORE than usual recoil of the WSM it did enable the scope to move. I have rectified the problem with a new set of Weaver Rings with an added scope tape that came with the rings for tactical uses. It adheres to the scope tube and the ring to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Thanks for everyone's input. Happy Hunting.

I ended up going with some Burris XTR Tactical rings now and with the larger surface area this scope will never move again.....I'll post updated pictures of my Vanguard .300WSM soon....

For what it's worth, I switched everything I own over to Warne Maxima bases and rings and have never had a problem with scope movement....even on the .460.
