John, sounds like you got a great deal on that package. The only thing I can't stand about the LRH are the knobs for the cheek peice adjustment, it just ruins the whole thing for me. No doubt it will shoot well. Let us know how the 6.5-284 feeds from the magazine in that gun, I've heard that cartrdige is less than ideal for repeaters. Ballistically it should make a great hunting round. Let us know what you settle on for a load, with velocity, group size etc, and post pics if you can.

I'm not crazy about the knobs either.  If I can shoot the rifle without it, I'm gonna remove the cheek piece.  Got the scope mounted this morning, really like the Vortex, nice fine x-hairs, have a box of factory ammo to zero with, then will try the hand loads.  Pic's will follow.

Thanks,JohnP

I need to pick up a Karsten cheekpiece myself.

If you look in my picture you will see I have a piece a pipe insulation wrapped with friction tape jury rigged to my stock now. I could get the next lower set of rings, but that still will not be enough for a good sight on the scope.... plus I am contemplating a NXS 12-42x56mm and will need these rings for the additional clearance.

Keep up posted on your results. I had looked at that rifle when I was window shopping, but got ths F Class strictly for competition.

Headed off Sunday to qualify for a 600yd F Class match in March.

I guess I have to shoot 200yds and 600yds on an official F Class range- with scoring pits and all, to be able to compete at next months match. You have to learn how to score in the pits between your courses of fire.

They use official 600yd F Class target at the qualifier- 3" X-ring, 6" ten ring, so I plan on saving my target on the 600yd leg of the qualifier. This will begin my 120 shot requirement to get a High Power Rifle Classification- trying for Expert, which would be 96.5% of my shots in the 6", 10 ring. That would be 116/120 Tongue

Will post results Sunday afternoon if the weather holds out here.

126 rounds through it so far. Maybe 20 tomorrow before my qualifier Sunday. Qualifier is 40 rounds.... 20 at 200yds and 20 at 600yds.

That should put her right at the failing point before my match next month Grin

I did put a Karsten cheekpiece on it. Looks a tad bit better than the pipe insulation wrapped with friction tape in my pic above. Treated myself to a padded canvas shooting mat and a 56" padded rifle bag that this thing actually fit's into. 6" of the stock were hanging out with my old bag and it only zipped halfway with the scope in the way.

I'm match ready!!!

Ran 12 rounds through the Savage today for a zero at 200yds since I never shot it at that short of a distance except 100yd chronying.

Four, 3-shot groups. I had three loads leftover at 51.6g vs. my "go-to" 51.3g load.... may go back to the 51.5g- 51.6g area. Vertical deviation of 0.125 MOA. 51.3g was still respectable with a 0.450 MOA vertical deviation. All groups still well less than 1 MOA. I'm ready for tomorrow, but need to explore adding a few 1/10th's of a grain to my existing match load.

First real match will be 2/26.

They let me escape 200yds with only two rounds fired..... keyhole shots.

do you ladder test your loads corey? i found that alot of my small hundred yard groups can have alot of variation in vertical elevation at distance if i dont ladder them.......

I do not ladder test per say. I shoot various loads at 300yds and look for a tight vertical deviation. At 300yds I want less than 1.5" vertical deviation. 100yd results mean zero with a VLD style bullet- they don't stabilize till 300yds.

Just finished 600yds. First shot was dead center at 3pm. Tweaked the windage and put the next 9 shots in the 10 ring with 6 in the x-ring. Range director stopped me cause he knew I was shooting a 6.5 with short barrel life and qualified me no problems. He said no one rarely shoots 9 straight in the 10/x-ring.

Good to go. Did not get to keep the target as they paste em they're so expensive.

Best part is this..... 14mph wind. I dialed 2 MOA to start and I was in the 6 ring dead on with elevation. Brought wimdage back to 1/4 MOA and just kept pecking 10's and x's. 10 ring is 6" and x is 3'. I was well less than 1 MOA at 600yds.

It was 42° this morning. Everyone was wondering why I kept my truck running till the line was hot.... duh!!! I'm keeping my ammo warm!!!

Corey:How many rounds do you think you can shoot before rebarreling? Are you going to get a Karsten?I have foam taped onto my Savage 308 with brown tape.I get some strange looks at the range.
John:Did you get to try yours this weekend and if so, how did it do,like the Karsten?Roger

I already put the Karsten cheekpiece on it. It did have pipe insulation covered with friction tape, but that had too much give for a solid weld. I have no issues with the Karsten. Some people think they look cheap, but it slides down out of the way quickly when I need to clean the barrel.

I'm hoping to get 1200 rounds out of the barrel, but I'm  already looking to get two Broughton  barrels done after taxes roll in. Buying my own reamer for barrels I may do down the road, so they have the same chamber size.
