I have a Weatherby Mark V Alaskan in .375 H&H and I'm having an issue with the safety.  With the Safety in the On position, I can still operate the bolt and eject a round.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Proper fix?

Sabot1,
If I had to guess, I'd say that the tip of the safety catch is broken off. Normally when you rotate the safety rearward into the "safe" position, at the same time a cam rotates an upside down "L" shaped catch into a notch in the bolt handle thereby holding the bolt in the down position. If you can lift the bolt with the safety on, this is likely the culprit.
I suggest you contact Weatherby's warranty department and see what they can do for you. The main number is:  805 227 2600 they can transfer you to the proper individual.
All the best,

Is it possible this is an older Mark V action with the receiver mounted safety?  Did this original style safety lock the bolt when in "safe"?

Interesting.  I had never seen a Wby with a safety like that.  It looks strange.

The rifle in the photo is one of the early South Gate Mark Vs made by PFI.  I don't know if the safety changed to the current configuration when production moved to Sauer or if Sauer continued with this original style safety at first.  Maybe someone from Weatherby will jump in here and give us a history lesson on the Mark V safety. *hint* *hint*  Wink

Gary: you are right pfi as well as Sauer made the Mark v safety like that. I belive Weatherby and Sauer made the changes in late 59 or early 1960. I have had 2 300wby like that and not sure if you know or not the bolts are not flutedon these. Also the reciver is not cut out with the half circle to aide in the ejection of a live round. I am not from Weatherby but have had a deep love of Weatherby,s scince i was about 11-12 yrs old.Good Hunting And Shooting To all

Purplefox: Yes, I know the early bolts were not fluted, but never noticed about the bevel in the receiver.  Since you own a Mark V with the early safety, can you tell us if these safeties locked the bolt in place like the current safety design does?

All,
I assumed, that by the original description (.375 ALASKAN) which we had a model designated as such (H prefix serial number, Japanese produced, and nickel plated not stainless) that if this was the model in question it would have the current safety design and then my description of the problem would likely still be accurate. Now, if it is a very early Weatherby (as pictured below), Southgate or Sauer design, and not likely an ALASKAN model, I'd suggest you contact the office here at 805 227 2600 and ask for Dean or Dan in the technical department (please have the serial number handy) and they can give you a definitive answer.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
