Vanguard 30.06 (24 posts)
Board Index » RiflesPosted 03/10/201011:57 PM
Evening folks,,new to this forum, but not new to Weatherbys. Recently purchased a very nicely finished Vanguard, one quite compariable to my Mark V. Made in Japan , serial V22XXX, in 30.06 Springfield. Would anyone here know what year this rifle was manufactured. I checked some #'s I had garnered off of the Weatherby Collectors site, and any #'s begining with 22 were representive of rifles made in Germany (not Japan) between 1981 and 1983. Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Gary"To one who has faith,no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible"

Gary acording to my book (Weatherby The Man The Gun The Legend) it falls into the 1972- 1984 so looking at your # i am thinking 1980. is my guessGood Hunting And Shooting To all

Thanks, that kind of fits in with what little info I could find earlier. I have its twin in a 7mm mag, and if this .06 is as spooky accurate as the 7, then I will have no problem continueing my love affair with Weatherbys."To one who has faith,no explanation is necessary. The Vanguard was never made in Germany so the #s you were looking at on the Weatherby Collectors site were Mark V numbers.

Gary are you shooting hand loads or factory ammo? I also have a 30-06 vanguard synthetic model the $399.00 model and it shoots .05 or less groups with my loads.Good Hunting And Shooting To all

.05" groups?! How do you even measure a group of 5/100 of an inch?

Gary : Informally you can measure outside to outside then subtract one full bullet dia to measure ragged one hole groups. Formally they have special bullet measurement calipers, and world record formal they may take a picture blow it up then measure.

not sure where your from but in my area its almost impossible to find 30/06 ammo or brass to reload for it. i picked up a 270 because its cheaper to reload for and i can put 70 rounds threw it and not feel a thing. my 270 is super accurite (.449") and so far i have been able to pop balloons out to 750 yds. with it.

I actually found sm rifle primers locally after several phone calls. Midway wanted just under $70 per 1k, haz-mat & shipping. Powder is still iffy, 224 cal bullets are non-existant at least the ones I want. Shelfs are slim pickens for ammo. A brick of 22 LR were $28 for the cheap stuff.

Morning folks Well. its been 3 months since I bought that 30.06. WOW- its just as accurate as the 7 mag is( both under an inch ) with premium ammo. Presently in pursuit of a (I think) a 1985 Delux, in .243. Will let ya know how this one pans out.

Hey gkdir,
I know it's been 3 months since you've first posted here, but I haven't seen anyone say Welcome to the Weatherby Nation! So I am saying it now... Welcome!
That's great news about your 30-06 being very accurate. Are you shooting reloads or factory stuff? My .300 Win Mag and my .243 Win are Vanguard Synthetic base model rifles, yet they both shoot Sub-1" 3 shot groups at 100 yds with my reloads. The .243 does better than the .300 does with both factory and reloads but still under 1.5" with good factory ammo. In fact my best 3 shot group with the .243 was .310" but the factory target measured .280" and these are not the Sub-MOA models, these are the base model as mentioned before.
Based upon my experience with Weatherby rifles, I would be willing to bet that if you get that .243, you will also have a great shooter!
