What Caliber would be nice to see in a Vanguard (17 posts)

what caliber would I love to see in a vanguard in this order.
1. 260 rem
2. 338 Federal
3. 270 wby mag
4. 325 wsm
5. 7.62x39

    My Vanguard Sub-MOA Varmint has a long action...
    err-uhm...that should read "Standard Action Length"

    Have toyed w/the thought of rebarreling it to 240 Wby if & when I shoot the 22-250 chamber out.  It's 22" bbl length doesn't leave any questions to shortening & reaming its oem chamber in 22 Varm...

        I make mine from small gauge (20-24) stainless steel wire. Use a pencil and empty thread spool to make an "eye" and spin the "tails" together using the spool as a bearing of sorts, remove when finished.           That particular hat was discontinued 2 or 3 years ago and replaced with the Waxed Cotton cap with "Weatherby" logo, product code ZMI4406 for $15

            257 vs 300 (6 posts)

            I am going on a hunt for deer, antelope, mt sheep and finally elk. My question??  Should I take my 300 or will my 257 take care of elk. I prefer my 257.

              Take whichever one you shoot best with...better a good shot with a .257 than a bad one with a .300 (although the margin for error is less with the .257).               First off let me say I'm a big fan of weatherby cartridges and I have a 300 wby in a Sako that lays the smack down on everything from speed goats to moose.

              I have the itch for a 257 wby laser beam. Other than going custom on a 700, 70 or whatever action I'm only aware of the LSS remington, vanguard and mark V rifles that chambe...

                I concure.
                The test worked well with audiences...from a marketing standpoint.
                But given the nature of freebore...one can start to see some forgiveness.
                Sure the Mark V will handle it. 
                So will Ruger No.1 and M77
                And you can bet the Vanguard will.
                Again- the Vanguard is a Rem 700 on steroids.

                    Just picked up my Mark XXII. What a beautiful rifle! Putting a scope on it this weekend and then sighting her in. Can't wait. Thanks Weatherby for the opportunity, great book about Roy Weatherby and the rifle. Just finished the book, wow! What a story, what a great man. The stories about Africa were inspiring.                         I have been reloading for a long time, but I have never been a fan of Hornady.  I have always used Nosler and just recently switched to Barnes.  I bought the Woodleigh's from a gunsmith friend of mine on his suggestion.  Thank you for telling me that Hornady was conservative in their #7 manual.  ...

                          Best all around Elk Caliber? (95 posts)

                          What is the best all purpose elk caliber?  There's allot that can do the job, but specific to elk what would you choose?

                          My 1st choice - 300 Weatherby

                          My 2nd choice - 30-06

                          My first choice would be the .300 Win Mag, followed by the .30-06, although there are many other great choices.  As was said earlier, shot placement is the key.  A shot in the vitals with a .270 Win is better then a poorly placed shot with a .338 Win Mag.  If someone is looking into getting a heavy caliber and has never shot one, it ...

                            7mm wthrby mag retumbo loads (3 posts)

                            got a sampler pack from Hodgon and the h1000 is working pretty well, but i don't have any load data for the retumbo.....anyone have any experience with this powder or is it just better for the bigger bores.....shooting the 139 gn hornady flat base, but might try a 150 or 154 gn....Mark V, 26 inch barrel.....also any powders working well in thi...

                            right now, all my work has been done with 139 gn flat base....I'm using 79.0 grns of H1000 and a win mag primer.....this is a compressed load....which i like.....should be the same burn all the time......haven't chrono'd it yet.....still looking for accuracy......but don't have a load yet for the 150 or 154 gr....might have to g...

                            just as of last week i am a qualified electrician, but will probably go back out to my dads station and start being a stockman again soon, plus our station is full to the brim with feral goats and big pigs, 1.1million acres of it
